The New Hanover beach towns are small on paper: about 6,864 people in Carolina Beach, 2,411 in Wrightsville Beach and 2,154 in Kure Beach in 2024 (source). In summer they fill up, and so do the restaurants, rentals, surf shops and charter boats that employ a lot of local people.
Film is part of the local economy too, though it's been quiet. Wilmington's film leaders reported near-record-low production in 2025 (source). Statewide, film and TV productions spent about $185.5 million in North Carolina in 2025 (source), down from more than $300 million in 2024 (source). Crew members are often freelancers with no employer plan.

Seasonal or freelance income and a Marketplace tax credit
A Marketplace tax credit is based on what you expect to earn for the whole year. If the summer goes well, or a production comes to town, you may owe part of the credit back at tax time. If the season is slow, your credit should have been bigger. For people whose income comes in a few busy months, that guess is hard to get right.
Health sharing and a primary care membership cost the same whatever you earn. A big summer doesn't raise the monthly amount, and a slow winter doesn't lower it. The amount is set by household size, the oldest member's age and the Initial Unshareable Amount you choose.
The trade-off is real: health sharing isn't insurance, sharing isn't guaranteed, and pre-existing conditions are phased in over three years. If your income in a given year is modest, a Marketplace plan with a tax credit, or NC Medicaid, may cost less. We'll show you both numbers.
Who it fits here, and who should stay on insurance
Usually a good fit: healthy individuals and families who buy their own plan, self-employed people, early retirees under 65, and households whose income is too high for much Marketplace help.
Usually better on insurance: anyone who qualifies for NC Medicaid, anyone with a serious ongoing condition who needs it paid for in year one, anyone planning a pregnancy in the next nine months, anyone who needs regular mental-health therapy, and anyone whose tax credit makes an ACA plan cheap.
In this area specifically: If you follow work out of state in the off-season, health sharing's lack of a network helps: an eligible bill from any licensed provider is handled the same way.

Questions we hear from this area
Does a busy summer change my monthly amount?
Not for health sharing or primary care. The monthly amount is set by household size, the oldest member's age, tobacco use and your Initial Unshareable Amount, not your income. Your income does change a Marketplace tax credit.
I work on film crews between other jobs. What are my options?
Check whether your union or a production offers a health plan. If not, compare a Marketplace plan (your tax credit depends on your yearly income) with health sharing and a primary care membership, which cost the same in good and slow years.
Is this health insurance?
No. Health care sharing and direct primary care are alternatives to insurance. Sharing is voluntary and not guaranteed, and it isn't Minimum Essential Coverage. North Carolina has no state penalty for going without insurance.
